Applebee’s Onion Straws
Applebee’s Onion Straws are a beloved appetizer featuring thin, crispy-fried onion strips coated in a seasoned batter.
While the menu offerings may vary by location, you can typically find Applebee’s Onion Straws as a popular starter or side dish, served as a generous portion in a basket or on a plate, perfect for sharing with friends or family accompanied by a dipping sauce for extra flavor. Common dipping sauces include Ranch Dressing, Honey BBQ Sauce or a zesty Aioli. They can also be found adding extra flavor to several Applebee’s Burgers, including Applebee’s Cowboy Burger.

Applebee's Onion Straws Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 large Sweet Vidalia Onion
- 2 cups Buttermilk
- 2 cups All Purpose Flour
- 1 tablespoon Salt
- Freshly ground Black Pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
- Canola Oil for frying
Instructions
- Peel and slice onion very thin.
- Place onion rings and pieces in a baking dish.
- Pour in buttermilk. Allow to soak for at least one hour at room temperature. If soaking for longer, place in the refrigerator.
- In a medium bowl, add flour, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Mix to combine. Set aside.
- Pour oil into a large pot, Dutch oven or fryer.
- Heat oil to 375°F.
- When oil is hot and shimmering, grab a handful of onions, allowing excess buttermilk to dip off, and toss into flour mixture. Turn to fully coat all pieces. Tap and shake off excess flour.
- Carefully place coated rings into hot oil. Fry for a few minutes until golden. Remove as soon as golden brown to a paper towel-covered plate to drain. Repeat until onions are gone.
- Serve immediately as hot as possible.
