Mashed Potatoes
Mashed Potatoes, a beloved culinary creation, have a rich history that spans centuries. Originating in South America, potatoes were introduced to Europe in the late 16th century through the Columbian Exchange. Initially met with skepticism, potatoes eventually gained popularity due to their versatility and ability to thrive in various climates.
The widespread cultivation of potatoes across Europe laid the foundation for mashed potatoes as a culinary tradition. However, it wasn’t until the 18th century that mashed potatoes gained prominence in Western cuisine. The dish’s simplicity and adaptability appealed to both home cooks and professional chefs, contributing to its widespread adoption.
Mashed potatoes became an integral part of European and American cuisine, evolving into a comfort food staple. In the United States, mashed potatoes are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinners and other festive occasions, symbolizing warmth and tradition.
Beyond their cultural significance, mashed potatoes hold practical value. Their smooth and creamy texture makes them an ideal accompaniment to a variety of main dishes, serving as a versatile side that pairs well with meats, stews, and vegetables. The dish has transcended borders, finding a place on tables worldwide, each region adding its unique twist to the preparation.
Mashed potatoes, with their humble origins and global appeal, stand as a testament to the culinary journey of a simple tuber, transformed into a timeless comfort food enjoyed by diverse cultures around the globe.

- 1 1/2 tablespoons freshly chopped Garlic or chopped Roasted Garlic Cloves
Instructions
- Wash potatoes thoroughly.
- Peel potatoes completely (or leave a small bit of skin on the potatoes, your choice).
- Cut potatoes into smaller, equally-sized pieces. (This will allow the potatoes to cook more evenly and quickly.)
- Place cut potato pieces in a large pot.
- Cover with cold water to just above the top of the potatoes.
- Place pot over medium high heat. Bring to a boil.
- Turn down to medium heat. Continue to cook potatoes until fork tender.

- Add butter and milk.
- Mix well with wire whisk or electric mixer until the desired consistency is reached.
- Using a rubber spatula, fold in the salt, pepper and garlic. Stir well to incorporate.
