The Old Fashioned Cocktail
The origins of the Old Fashioned cocktail date back to 1806, described as a “potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar.” During this era, any mix of spirit, bitters, water, and sugar was simply referred to as an Old Fashioned cocktail or just a cocktail.
The version of the Old Fashioned cocktail that we savor today, typically made with bourbon or other whiskey, is credited to The Pendennis Club, a gentleman’s club established in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky. Nestled in the city’s history, this specific recipe gained prominence and has since become a classic in mixology.
Louisville, recognizing the Old Fashioned’s deep connection to its heritage, officially declared it as the city’s cocktail in 2015. This designation pays homage to the cocktail’s historical ties to Louisville and solidifies its status as a symbol of the city’s rich culinary and mixological traditions. The Old Fashioned, evolving from a generic term for a mixed drink to a celebrated classic with a distinct recipe, continues to be a timeless favorite among cocktail enthusiasts worldwide.
