Mai Tai
The Mai Tai is a classic tiki cocktail with roots in mid-20th century Polynesian-inspired bars in the United States. It was created in 1944 by Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron in Oakland, California, although there’s some debate with Donn Beach (Don the Beachcomber), who also claimed to have invented it in the 1930s. The name “Mai Tai” comes from the Tahitian phrase “mai tai roa ae,” meaning “out of this world,” reportedly exclaimed by a guest who tasted the drink for the first time.
The Mai Tai typically includes a combination of light and dark rums, lime juice, orgeat syrup (almond flavor), and orange curaçao, creating a balanced yet potent drink with sweet, sour, and nutty flavors. Over the years, the Mai Tai has become synonymous with tropical vacations and is a staple on the menus of tiki bars and beach resorts worldwide.
Its enduring popularity is due to its vibrant flavor profile, which perfectly captures the essence of a tropical paradise. The Mai Tai is not only a delicious cocktail but also a symbol of the post-war tiki culture boom, evoking a sense of escapism and relaxation. Today, it remains one of the most beloved and iconic cocktails, especially in settings that celebrate island life and exotic flavors.
