Ruby Tuesday Onion Straws Recipe


  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 cups Buttermilk
  • 2 cup All-purpose Flour
  • 1 tablespoon Salt
  • Freshly ground Black Pepper
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (Whatever is your heat preference.)
  • Canola Oil for frying


  1. Slice onions very thin.  For rings – Leave in rings.  For straws (like Ruby Tuesdays) – Cut ’em up a bit.
  2. Place onion pieces in a baking dish and cover with buttermilk for at least one hour.
  3. Combine dry ingredients and set aside.
  4. Heat oil to 375 degrees.
  5. Grab a handful of onion pieces, throw into the flour mixture, tap to shake off excess and plunge into hot oil.
  6. Fry for a few minutes and remove as soon as golden brown.
  7. Repeat until all onion pieces are cooked.
