Outback Steakhouse
Outback Steakhouse is a well-known casual dining restaurant chain with a distinct Australian-inspired theme. Founded in 1988 in Tampa, Florida, it has since grown to become a global brand with numerous locations worldwide. The restaurant’s signature offering is its selection of high-quality, seasoned steaks, often cooked on open grills to impart a smoky flavor. However, Outback Steakhouse also features a diverse menu that includes seafood, chicken, burgers, and a variety of appetizers and sides.
What sets Outback Steakhouse apart is its warm and rustic ambiance, adorned with Australian memorabilia and a laid-back atmosphere. Patrons often find themselves greeted with a friendly “G’day, mate” from the staff, enhancing the restaurant’s unique charm.
One of the standout items on the menu is the Bloomin’ Onion, a massive, deep-fried onion served with a zesty dipping sauce, which has become an iconic appetizer. Other popular dishes include the “Aussie-Tizers” and the flavorful Bloomin’ Steak, featuring a marinated steak topped with the famous Bloomin’ Onion.
Outback Steakhouse offers a memorable dining experience that combines hearty meals, a relaxed environment, and a touch of Australian culture. It’s a go-to destination for those seeking a flavorful steakhouse experience with a distinctive twist.
Outback Steakhouse Honey Wheat Bushman Bread
Outback Steakhouse’s Honey Wheat Bushman Bread is a beloved staple that greets diners with its warm, subtly sweet aroma and hearty texture, setting the stage for the bold flavors of an Australian-inspired meal. Though Outback is known for its steaks, this bread has taken on a life of its own, gaining near-iconic status among fans who savor its deep brown hue, soft chew, and slight crunch from the oat-dusted crust. While its exact origin remains a closely guarded secret, the bread draws inspiration from rustic, whole-grain loaves that offer both nourishment and indulgence.
Infused with honey and molasses, the bread achieves a delicate balance of sweetness and earthiness, perfectly complementing Outback’s signature whipped butter. Its distinctive dark color, often mistaken for pumpernickel, actually comes from a combination of whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, and sweeteners, lending it both richness and depth. Unlike traditional steakhouse breads that lean toward airy or crusty textures, this loaf is soft, dense, and designed to be heartily torn apart.
Its popularity is so widespread that many fans attempt to recreate it at home, yearning for that signature flavor outside the restaurant’s walls. Whether paired with a juicy steak, slathered in butter, or enjoyed on its own, Outback’s Honey Wheat Bushman Bread is more than just a side—it’s an essential part of the experience, a warm welcome that embodies comfort, hospitality, and the promise of a great meal ahead.

how do I print this?

Ok, yea. This worked! I did not use a bread maker. I just mixed the dry ingredients and then added the wet ingredients, pulled together with a wooden spoon and then kneed the bread for a while. I used instant active yeast. The end result was a moist bread that was a little too moist. Might be because I cooked it with a pan of water in the oven. I probably could have cooked it a bit longer. the crust was not that stiff.

Came out looking much paler than the real thing – mid-brown rather than chocolate coloured, and the taste wasn’t what I remembered. I will have another try, but so far not terribly impressed.

I made a similar copy cat recipe, and it called for red, yellow and blue food coloring. The bread was good and turned our dark brown like Outback’s, but I think I will leave the food coloring out next time. We served it warm with honey butter.

I made this bread in my bread machine. It turned out delicious! I added 2 tablspoons dark molasses. I did need to add a little more flour, but am really very happy with the results.
