Chocolate Chip Cookies: America’s Sweet Icon
Chocolate Chip Cookies are one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable desserts in the world, with a history that begins in the United States in the 1930s. Their creation is credited to Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, who famously added chopped bits of a Nestlé chocolate bar to her butter cookie dough, expecting them to melt. Instead, the chocolate held its shape and softened into gooey pockets, creating what would become a baking revolution. Nestlé eventually bought the rights to her recipe, and the “Toll House” name lives on today as a cornerstone of American baking.
These cookies are typically made from a dough of butter, brown and white sugar, eggs, vanilla, flour, baking soda, and—of course—chocolate chips. The dough is scooped or spooned onto a baking sheet and baked until golden at the edges and soft in the center. Variations range from chewy to crispy, thin to thick, with add-ins like nuts, oats, or flavored chips. Bakers have developed regional and artisanal takes, from classic Nestlé Toll House to gourmet versions studded with sea salt or made with browned butter and premium dark chocolate chunks.
Chocolate chip cookies are particularly popular in the United States and Canada, though they’ve gained international affection. They’re a staple in lunchboxes, bake sales, and coffee shops, served solo, with milk, or even sandwiched with ice cream. Restaurants and dessert bars have taken the cookie to new levels—stuffing them, skillet-baking them, or serving them warm under scoops of ice cream.
Universally loved for their nostalgic charm and irresistible flavor, chocolate chip cookies represent more than just a treat—they’re a comforting bite of home and a timeless American classic.

Disney’s Ghirardelli Ice Cream Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup 2 sticks Unsalted Butter, softened
- 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar
- 3/4 cup packed Light Brown Sugar
- 2 large Eggs
- 2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 package (11 ounces) Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Chips
- 1 cup Chopped Walnuts or Pecans optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 - 3 minutes.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Avoid overmixing to prevent tough cookies.
- Fold in Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Chips and chopped nuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Using a tablespoon or a small cookie scoop, drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading.
- Place pan in the preheated oven. Bake for 9 - 11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set but still soft.
- Remove from oven.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
