Chicken Wings: From Bar Appetizers to Global Party Food
Chicken Wings, once considered a humble part of the chicken, have become one of the most popular appetizers in bars and restaurants worldwide, as well as a beloved party food. Known for their crispy skin, juicy meat, and variety of flavorful coatings, chicken wings have evolved over the years into an iconic dish served in countless forms.
The origin of the modern chicken wing dish is credited to Buffalo, New York, where, in 1964, Teressa Bellissimo at the Anchor Bar is said to have invented the now-famous “Buffalo wings.” Initially created as a late-night snack for her son and his friends, the wings were deep-fried and coated in a spicy, tangy sauce made from hot sauce and butter. The dish quickly gained popularity, becoming a staple in bars, restaurants, and sports arenas across the U.S. By the 1980s, Buffalo wings had spread nationwide, becoming a favorite appetizer for parties, particularly during sports events like the Super Bowl.
Today, chicken wings are enjoyed in bars, sports venues, and restaurants all over the world, with numerous variations that reflect regional tastes. In addition to the classic Buffalo style, wings are now served in flavors like honey mustard, teriyaki, BBQ, garlic Parmesan, and even spicy Korean-style sauces, which are heavily influenced by the Korean dish yangnyeom chicken. This international variation showcases the adaptability of chicken wings, blending local ingredients and flavors to suit diverse palates.
Beyond restaurants, chicken wings are a popular party food, often served at gatherings, cookouts, and casual events. Their easy-to-eat, finger-friendly nature makes them a favorite at both informal and formal events. Whether served as appetizers in a bar or as the main event at a party, chicken wings continue to be a universally loved dish, bringing people together over great flavors and casual conversation. From the classic Buffalo-style to global adaptations, chicken wings remain an ever-evolving and beloved dish around the world.

Instructions
- In a small saucepan, whisk together mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and salt.
