Guacamole: A Classic Latin American Delight
Guacamole is a beloved and iconic dip that has become a staple in Latin American cuisine, particularly in Mexico, where it is considered a culinary treasure. At its core, guacamole is made from ripe avocados, which are mashed and combined with various ingredients to create a creamy, flavorful dish. The most traditional version includes mashed avocado, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, lime juice, and a touch of salt. Some variations also include chili peppers, garlic, or even fruit like mango or pomegranate for an added twist.
The origin of guacamole can be traced back to the Aztecs, who lived in what is now Mexico. The word “guacamole” comes from the Nahuatl word “ahuacamolli,” which is a combination of “ahuacatl” (avocado) and “molli” (sauce). The Aztecs were the first to recognize the rich, creamy texture and nutritional value of avocados, and they incorporated them into their diet. Over the centuries, guacamole has evolved, with various regions and cultures putting their own spin on the recipe, making it a truly versatile and widely-loved dish.
In Mexico, guacamole is traditionally served as a side dish with tacos, grilled meats, and as a topping for dishes like tortas and quesadillas. It’s also commonly served with crispy tortilla chips, particularly during gatherings and celebrations. In the United States, guacamole has been popularized as an appetizer or snack, especially at Mexican restaurants or during events like Super Bowl parties, where it’s often paired with chips or nachos.
Regional variations of guacamole are as diverse as the cultures that cherish it. In Puebla, for example, guacamole might be enhanced with a dash of pomegranate seeds for a sweet, tangy contrast. In Oaxaca, mole can sometimes be added to guacamole for a richer, smokier flavor. In the Caribbean, guacamole may include tropical fruits like mango or papaya, reflecting the region’s love for blending flavors from the land and sea.
Guacamole is so much more than just a dip – it is an essential part of Latin American and Caribbean cuisine, where it serves as a symbol of the culture’s rich culinary history, agricultural diversity, and hospitality. It’s a dish that brings people together, a delicious reminder of the simple yet complex flavors of the region.

Disney Springs’ Paradiso 37 Guacamole Recipe
Ingredients
- 5 large ripe Hass Avocados
- Freshly squeezed Juice of 2 large Limes
- 1 medium Red Onion peeled and diced
- 3/4 cup finely chopped Fresh Cilantro
- 1 large Tomato diced
- Kosher Salt to taste
- Serrano Chilies seeded and finely chopped, to taste
Instructions
- Starting at the top, with a very sharp knife, cut down into each avocado until you hit the pit. Cut completely around the avocado, top to bottom, touching the pit the entire time.
- Pull the two halves of the avocado apart and remove the pit with a spoon.
- Use the spoon to scoop the avocado out of the skin. (Some people like to score the avocado with a knife before scooping.) Make sure to gently scrap the skin to get the dark, creamy "good stuff."
- Place 2/3 to 3/4 of the softest avocados in a mixing bowl.
- Add the juice of one lime immediately to prevent browning.
- Using a fork, roughly mash avocados.
- Place the remaining firmest avocados on a cutting board or plate and chop into 1/4 to 1/2-inch pieces. Add these to the mashed avocado in the bowl and mix well.
- Add red onion, tomato and cilantro to the mashed avocado. Stir gently to combine.
- Taste. Add juice of the second lime and kosher salt to taste.
- Stir slightly until all ingredients are incorporated.
- Stir in Serrano chilies, to taste.
- Serve immediately with your favorite tortilla chips as a dip or use as a topping for tacos, nachos, or other Mexican dishes.
- Serving Tip: For an extra flavor boost, refrigerate the guacamole for 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
