For those reasons – and so that you can enjoy these wonderful dishes as much as we do! – we have chosen to share these recipes we find and love here on Secret Copycat Restaurant Recipes with you.
Avanti Italian Restaurant: A Phoenix Culinary Landmark Since 1974
Established in 1974 by Italian restaurateurs Angiolo Livi and Benito Mellino, Avanti Italian Restaurant has become a cherished institution in Phoenix, Arizona. The name “Avanti,” meaning “forward” in Italian, reflects the founders’ commitment to innovation and excellence in European-inspired cuisine.
From its inception, Avanti introduced Phoenix diners to authentic Italian and continental dishes, including offerings like escargot, octopus salad, and freshly made pasta—culinary experiences that were rare in the region at the time. To ensure quality, the restaurant went to great lengths, such as flying in fresh East Coast seafood daily and cultivating their own herbs and produce.
Avanti’s dedication to culinary excellence has earned it numerous accolades, including induction into the Culinary Hall of Fame, recognition from Gourmet Magazine, Wine Spectator, and the Zagat Survey. Signature dishes that have captivated patrons include Ossobuco Milanese, Cioppino Mediterraneo, and a variety of house-made pastas like linguine carbonara and mushroom risotto.
The restaurant’s ambiance, characterized by its timeless black-and-white interior, offers a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere. This setting, combined with impeccable service, has made Avanti a preferred destination for both intimate dinners and grand celebrations. Over the years, Avanti has also expanded its offerings to include catering services for notable events such as Super Bowl 30, the Barrett-Jackson Antique Car Show, and the Phoenix Open.
As Avanti celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, it continues to be a testament to enduring quality and tradition in the Phoenix dining scene. Under the stewardship of Chef Angiolo Livi, the restaurant remains committed to delivering an unforgettable dining experience that honors its rich history while embracing the future.
Caesar Salad
The Caesar Salad is a classic, globally popular dish with a storied history that traces back to the 1920s. It was created by Italian-American restaurateur Caesar Cardini, who operated a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. According to legend, the salad came about during a busy Fourth of July weekend in 1924 when Cardini was low on ingredients. He improvised a dish using romaine lettuce, olive oil, raw egg, parmesan cheese, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and croutons, tossing it tableside for a dramatic flair. This original salad was light yet rich, with bold flavors that quickly captivated diners.
The Caesar Salad’s popularity soared, and by the 1940s, it was embraced in American restaurants and eventually worldwide. A good Caesar Salad stays true to its roots, featuring crisp romaine lettuce, freshly made croutons, a balanced, creamy dressing with a hint of anchovy, and a dusting of high-quality parmesan. Authentic renditions often use whole romaine leaves and dress them tableside, allowing diners to experience the dish’s history firsthand.
Over the decades, variations emerged, including grilled chicken or shrimp-topped versions, but the classic Caesar remains a favorite. Its mix of creamy, tangy, and savory flavors with crunchy textures has made it an enduring choice, enjoyed as both an elegant appetizer and a hearty main. Caesar Salad’s unique blend of simplicity and sophistication has solidified its place as one of the most iconic and beloved salads in culinary history.
