The Versatile Omelet: A Global Favorite with Endless Variations
The Omelet, a simple yet satisfying dish, has become a staple in breakfast menus worldwide. Its origins trace back to France, where it was initially a humble dish made from eggs, salt, and butter. While France is often credited with perfecting the modern omelet, the concept of cooking eggs in a skillet has roots in various cultures, including Persian, Roman, and even ancient Egyptian cuisines, where eggs were combined with various fillings and seasonings.
The word “omelet” itself is derived from the French term “alemette,” meaning a thin, flat, and round dish. By the 16th century, the omelet had become a popular dish in French cuisine, evolving from its basic form into the many variations we see today. The French version, typically cooked with fresh herbs and a bit of cheese, remains the gold standard, but as the dish spread across the globe, it was adapted to suit local tastes and ingredients.
Omelets are most commonly associated with breakfast or brunch, but their versatility means they can be enjoyed at any time of day. In France, omelets are often served as a light meal, while in the United States, they are commonly found at diners and breakfast cafés, often filled with ingredients like bacon, sausage, peppers, onions, and cheese. In Japan, a variation known as “tamagoyaki” is a sweet, rolled omelet often served as part of a sushi platter or as a standalone dish.
From casual street food vendors in Mexico, where “tacos de huevo” (egg tacos) are popular, to high-end restaurants offering gourmet omelet fillings like lobster and truffle oil, the omelet continues to be a favorite around the world. Whether served with a side of hash browns or as part of a sophisticated multi-course meal, the omelet’s ability to adapt to various tastes and preferences has ensured its lasting popularity.

Weiler's Deli Denver Omelet Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
- 1 medium Potato peeled and diced
- 4 large Eggs
- 1/2 cup diced Cooked Ham
- 1/4 cup finely chopped Green Bell Pepper
- 1/4 cup finely chopped Onion
- 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar Cheese
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper to taste
- 2 slices Rye Bread toasted
- Butter for spreading
Instructions
- Pour olive oil into a medium skillet. Place over medium heat.
- When oil is hot and shimmering, add diced potatoes. Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and tender, about 10 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Remove from skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed. Add chopped bell pepper and onion. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Remove and set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Place butter into a medium non-stick skillet. Place over medium heat.
- When butter has melted and is hot (do not burn), pour in the beaten eggs, swirling to coat the bottom. As the edges set, gently lift them to allow uncooked eggs to flow underneath.
- Once eggs are mostly set but still slightly runny on top, sprinkle the sautéed vegetables, diced ham and shredded cheddar cheese evenly over one half of the omelet.
- Carefully fold omelet in half and cook for an additional minute to melt the cheese.
- Slide the omelet onto a plate.
- Serve with toasted rye bread spread with butter.
