Starbucks
Starbucks, one of the world’s most recognizable coffee brands, began in 1971 in Seattle, Washington, founded by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. Originally, Starbucks was a small shop selling high-quality coffee beans and equipment, but in 1982, Howard Schultz joined the company and later transformed it into a café-style business inspired by Italy’s espresso culture. By the late 1980s, Schultz acquired Starbucks and began expanding rapidly, introducing Americans to a European-style coffeehouse experience.
Starbucks’ popularity soared in the 1990s and 2000s as it spread nationwide and then globally, setting new standards for the coffee industry with its wide variety of espresso-based drinks and customizable options. Iconic beverages like the Frappuccino, Pumpkin Spice Latte, and various seasonal drinks contributed to its status as a cultural phenomenon, attracting a diverse clientele. Alongside its drinks, Starbucks offers an evolving menu of pastries, breakfast items, sandwiches, and snacks, with items such as the Egg Bites, Spinach Feta Wrap, and cake pops becoming fan favorites.
Known for its “third place” philosophy, Starbucks emphasizes creating a welcoming atmosphere for socializing or working, complete with Wi-Fi and comfortable seating. With thousands of locations worldwide, Starbucks continues to adapt, offering plant-based milks, mobile ordering, and sustainable practices, making it a go-to destination for both coffee aficionados and casual customers looking for a reliable, convenient, and familiar coffeehouse experience.
Apple Fritters
Apple Fritters, a beloved treat made by deep-frying a batter filled with diced apples and often spiced with cinnamon, have origins tracing back to European and early American cooking traditions. Fried dough was a staple in many cultures, and by the 1800s, apple fritters were a popular dessert in both Europe and America, where apples were plentiful and easy to incorporate into recipes. The fritter’s combination of warm, tender apples encased in a crispy, golden shell has since made it a staple in bakeries and cafes, particularly in the U.S. and Canada.
Typically, apple fritters are made by mixing chopped apples into a flour-based batter, frying the mixture until it’s golden and crispy, and finishing with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of glaze. This style lends itself to a delightful contrast between the crisp exterior and the warm, soft apple filling inside. The inclusion of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg enhances the flavor, adding warmth and a touch of nostalgia.
Good apple fritters are recognized for their light, fluffy texture and slightly tart apple chunks, which balance the sweetness. They’re often enjoyed as a breakfast pastry, dessert, or snack, and can be found at diners, coffee shops, and local bakeries, beloved for their comforting taste and old-fashioned appeal.
