Arby’s
Brothers Forrest and Leroy Raffel opened the first Arby’s in Boardman, Ohio in 1964. Their idea was unusual for quick service at the time: offer a premium roast beef sandwich rather than another hamburger.
Arby’s became the first nationally franchised coast-to-coast sandwich chain and gradually expanded its menu with turkey, brisket, chicken, gyros and other meat-forward choices. That broader sandwich identity eventually became central to the familiar “We Have the Meats” message.
The Angus Cheesesteak continues the same tradition by placing a substantial beef sandwich at the center of the menu rather than treating it as a temporary burger alternative.
Arby’s Takes Its Cheesesteak Seriously
Arby’s added the Angus Cheesesteak to its permanent national menu on June 15, 2026 after a limited-time cheesesteak became one of the chain’s most popular recent launches.
The new version uses seasoned, thinly shaved 100 percent Angus steak, melted white American Cooper Cheese and thick-cut caramelized onions. It is served on an Amoroso’s sesame seed sub roll, bringing two well-known Philadelphia products into the build.
Unlike the previous limited-time version, the permanent sandwich omits bell peppers and garlic aioli, keeping the focus squarely on beef, cheese and onions. A Half Pound Cheesesteak is also available for larger appetites.
Arby’s Angus Cheesesteak Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter divided
- 1 large Yellow Onion cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices
- 1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt divided
- 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil
- 1 pound thinly shaved Angus Ribeye Steak
- 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground Black Pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon Granulated Sugar
- 8 ounces thinly sliced Cooper Sharp White American Cheese
- 4 Amoroso Sesame Seed Sub Rolls split
Instructions
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add the onion and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook for 18 to 22 minutes, stirring occasionally, until very soft and golden. Transfer to a plate.
- Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the vegetable oil.
- Spread the steak across the hot skillet. Cook for 45 seconds without stirring.
- Chop and turn the steak with two spatulas. Season with the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, smoked paprika, sugar and remaining salt.
- Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the steak is browned but still juicy.
- Return the onions to the skillet. Toss with the steak and divide the mixture into 4 portions.
- Place the cheese over each portion. Cover the skillet and cook for 45 to 60 seconds, until melted.
- Melt the remaining butter on a clean griddle or skillet. Toast the rolls cut-side down until lightly golden.
- Scoop one portion of steak, onions and cheese into each toasted roll.
- Serve immediately while hot and creamy, adding a little extra black pepper or salt to taste.
- Cooper Sharp can be difficult to find outside the Mid-Atlantic region. Full-fat white American cheese sliced at a supermarket deli provides the closest widely available substitute.
- Amoroso rolls may be ordered online or found in some restaurant-supply stores. When unavailable, use soft 7-inch sesame sub rolls with a lightly chewy crust rather than firm French bread.
