French Dip Sandwiches
The French Dip Sandwich is a culinary classic steeped in simplicity and rich flavor. At its heart, it’s a sandwich crafted from thinly sliced, tender roast beef nestled in a crusty baguette, served with a side of au jus—a warm, savory beef broth—for dipping. This harmony of textures and flavors has made it an enduring favorite.
Its origin story begins in early 20th-century Los Angeles, where it is claimed to have been created accidentally at either Philippe the Original or Cole’s, two iconic LA establishments. According to one tale, a customer requested a sandwich with softened bread, leading to its accidental dunking in gravy. Another story credits a request from a police officer with sore gums, spurring the invention. Regardless of its true roots, the sandwich quickly became a legend.
Beloved nationwide, the French Dip appears on menus ranging from casual diners to upscale eateries, often embellished with additions like melted cheese, caramelized onions, or horseradish sauce. Houston’s and Lawry’s Prime Rib are known for excellent versions of this dish.
This sandwich embodies comfort food sophistication, offering a satisfying bite that feels indulgent yet approachable. Whether savored in a historic LA deli or reimagined with gourmet twists, the French Dip is a timeless testament to the beauty of pairing quality ingredients with thoughtful simplicity.
