Apple Crisp
Apple Crisp is a classic and comforting dessert that’s beloved for its warm, spiced apples and crispy, crumbly topping. It’s a relatively simple dessert to prepare and can be enjoyed on its own or with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Here’s a basic overview of how apple crisp is typically made:
- Apples – The key ingredient is, as you might guess, apples, usually peeled, cored and sliced or diced. Popular apple varieties for apple crisp include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Fuji, but you can use your favorite.
- Seasoning – The apple slices are typically tossed with sugar and spices like cinnamon and sometimes a touch of nutmeg or allspice. Lemon juice is often added to enhance the flavor.
- Topping – The topping is a mixture of flour, oats, sugar (often brown sugar) and cold butter. Sometimes chopped nuts like pecans or almonds are added for extra crunch and flavor. The mixture is crumbled over the apples.
- Baking – The apple crisp is then baked in the oven until the apples are tender and the topping turns golden brown and crispy. This process melds the flavors and textures together.
- Serving – Apple crisp is best served warm. It’s commonly served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, which contrasts the warm dessert beautifully.
Apple crisp is a timeless dessert enjoyed year-round, but it’s especially popular during the fall when apples are in season. It’s a comforting and homely dessert that’s perfect for gatherings or as a simple, satisfying treat.
