BD’s Mongolian Grill: Stir-Fry Your Way
BD’s Mongolian Grill is a unique dining experience that allows guests to create their own stir-fry bowls, offering a fun and interactive way to enjoy Asian-inspired cuisine. Established in 1992 by Billy Downs in Ferndale, Michigan, BD’s Mongolian Grill was inspired by a similar concept Downs observed in London during the late 1980s . The restaurant quickly gained popularity for its build-your-own stir-fry approach, where diners select from a variety of fresh ingredients and sauces, which are then cooked on a large, flat-top grill.
The concept draws inspiration from traditional Mongolian cooking methods, where meats and vegetables are stir-fried on large, heated surfaces . However, BD’s Mongolian Grill adds its own twist by offering a wide array of ingredients and sauces, allowing for a personalized dining experience. Over the years, the restaurant has expanded to multiple locations across the United States, providing guests with a consistent and customizable dining option.
In 2017, BD’s Mongolian Grill became part of Dallas-based Mongolian Concepts, which also owns sister brands Genghis Grill and Flat Top Grill . This acquisition has allowed BD’s to continue evolving, introducing new flavors and sauces to enhance the dining experience. Despite some closures in recent years, BD’s Mongolian Grill remains a popular choice for those seeking a flavorful and interactive meal.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular guest, BD’s Mongolian Grill offers a unique and enjoyable dining experience that caters to a variety of tastes and preferences.
The Irresistible Allure of Asian Restaurant-Style Fried Rice
Fried Rice is a beloved dish found across Asia, with each region adding its own flair to this simple yet flavorful recipe. While its exact origin is debated, it is widely accepted that China is the birthplace of fried rice, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), when leftover rice was stir-fried with vegetables, meats, and spices. The dish soon spread throughout Asia due to trade and cultural exchange, gaining popularity in countries like Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, each adapting the dish to their unique culinary traditions.
The core of fried rice lies in its versatility—using leftover rice as the base, it can be transformed with a wide variety of ingredients such as vegetables, eggs, meats (like chicken, shrimp, or pork), and soy sauce. The dish is often enhanced with garlic, ginger, and sesame oil to impart depth of flavor. Asian Restaurant-Style Fried Rice is typically cooked in a wok over high heat, which ensures that the rice gets a crispy texture on the edges while still maintaining moisture and flavor throughout.
In Chinese cuisine, fried rice is a staple, and varieties like Yangzhou fried rice or pineapple fried rice are common on restaurant menus. Japanese-style fried rice, known as Chahan, is often prepared with soy sauce and can include additional ingredients such as seafood or bacon. In Korean cuisine, bokkeumbap is another variation, usually made with kimchi and a spicy kick.
Fried rice is a favorite not only in Asian restaurants but also in homes around the world, as it offers a quick, economical, and customizable meal. Its balance of savory, umami, and sweet flavors continues to make it a go-to comfort food for many. Whether you’re ordering takeout from your local restaurant or cooking it at home, fried rice remains one of the most popular dishes in Asian cuisine worldwide.
