McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie
Back in the good ol’ days of the first wave of fast food in America, McDonald’s had a really good thing going with their hot apple and cherry pies. They were deep fried and extremely popular.
But the kill-joys of “healthier eating” and “less-fat”, caused the giant chain to replaced their amazing fried babies with the current baked product.
Luckily for us, Pillsbury still makes a pie you can fry. So you can have those volcanic hot pies you remember so well from your childhood again at home.
And, best of all, this recipe is SUPER EASY!
McDonald's Hot Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 - 6 cups Vegetable Oil for frying
- 1 package Pillsbury Apple Turnovers (Find them in the refrigerated section of your supermarket)
Instructions
Make the Pies
- On waxed paper, unroll the turnover dough. You will see six 3 x 3-inch pieces. Tear off 4 of the squares.
- Stretch the dough out to about 4 x 5-inch rectangles on the waxed paper.
- Spread 1/2 of the included apple pie filling on 2 of the doughs, leaving about 1/2 inch of dough around edges. Clear a 3/4 inch space lengthwise down the middle of both.
- Place the remaining two doughs on top of the two with the filling.
- Crimp the edges. You should have what looks like two giant pop-tarts.
- Carefully cut both of them precisely down the middle, in that 3/4-inch space you created when you cleared the filling.
- Crimp those two edges.
- With your hands, carefully shape the dough to form an attractive, uniform shaped pie. They should look like small burritos, only
- crimped around the edges.
- Place all four, flat on waxed paper, in the freezer. Chill for about 45 minutes.
- Remove from freezer.
- Spray all sides of each pie with water mist from a spray bottle.
- Return to the freezer for at least another hour.
At this point you can place the pies in a sealable freezer bag and place back in the freezer for future use...
Or Deep-Fry Them Now
Cook the Pies
- Preheat oil in a deep fryer or large pot on the stove top to 375°F.
- Preheat oven to warm.
- Remove pies from freezer.
- Quickly dip a frozen pie in cold water, making sure to immerse it entirely.
- Drop the pie into the hot oil. Be careful - it will most likely splatter.
- When all pies are in the oil, place a spare fryer basket over the top. ("Sandwiching" the pies between the two baskets) or hold the pies down with a spider strainer, if using the stove top method. This ensures the pies are fully submerged. It is important that the pies are fully submerged or a good portion of it won't cook correctly.
- Cook 5 - 7 minutes. Check after 5 minutes - the color should be a golden brown. Cook longer if needed.
- Carefully remove cooked pies. Place on a paper towel-covered plate to drain for 1 minute.
- Place pies directly on the oven rack in your warmed oven. Warm for at least 10 minutes, and as long as 30 minutes.
- Enjoy your McDonald’s Hot Apple Pie, but use caution… just like in the good ol' days, the apple filling will be tongue-scorchingly hot.
- The pies will not look exactly the same as the old McDonald’s hot pies. They will also be smaller. The taste, however, should be just like you remember.
- The pies may stick to the fry basket. If this happens, carefully remove using a knife. You don't want to rip the dough.
- If you wonder why these pies have to be frozen, it is to get a crispy crust. Spraying with water beforehand gives a little ice glaze that helps the outer crust attain the correct texture. Finally, dipping in water just before placing in the oil helps form a flaky, crispier layer on the outside, and the famous "doughy" crust on the inside.
