Whole Foods Smokey TLTA Sandwich has been blowing up the Internet. Vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters are all singing the praises of this smokey, creamy vegan version of the classic BLTA (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Avocado) Sandwich.

The name stands for Tempeh, Lettuce, Tomato and Avocado – and we have discovered the exact brand and flavor of Tempeh Whole Foods use in their Smokey TLTA Sandwich (We simply asked them. As always the kind folks at Whole Foods were happy to oblige.) One pack of the Tempeh is enough to make 2 sandwiches

Whole Foods Smokey TLTA Sandwich Recipe

Makes 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 2 Ciabatta Bread Bun, sliced in 1/2 lengthwise
  • 1 6-ounce package LightLife Organic Smoky Tempeh Strips Fakin’ Bacon (See Note 1 below)
  • 3 – 4 slices Tomato
  • Vegan Roasted Garlic Aioli, to taste (See Note 2 below for sources and a recipe)
  • 2 leaves Lettuce, or a handful of shredded Lettuce, if desired (we saw them fixed both ways on the shelf)
  • 1 Hass Avocado, peeled, seeded and sliced (See Note 3 below to prepare Avocados)
  • Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Place the Fakin’ Bacon on a cookie sheet in single layer.
  3. Cook the Fakin’ Bacon in the oven for 3 – 5 minutes (check frequently to make sure it’s not burning.) Remove and flip pieces. Return to oven to cook for another 3 – 5 minutes. Check. Return to oven, if necessary, flipping and cooking until it starts to looks “done” and starts to just feel dry. Note – In our experience, the Fakin’ Bacon will not ‘crisp up” like real bacon.
  4. Remove Fakin’ Bacon from oven and set aside.
  5. Slather a good amount of roasted garlic aioli on both the top and bottom buns.
  6. Lay out the 2 bottom buns, divide the ingredients equally and build your Smokey TLTA Sandwich in this order:

Fakin’ Bacon
Tomato slices
Lettuce
Avocado slices

  1. Add salt and pepper, to taste.
  2. Top with the top bun.
  3. Cut in 1/2.
  4. Enjoy.

Note 3 – To Prepare Avocados

  1. Starting at the top, with a very sharp knife, cut down into each avocado until you hit the seed.
  2. Very carefully cut completely around the avocado, top to bottom, touching the pit the entire time.
  3. Twist and pull the two halves of the avocado apart.
  4. Remove the seed with a spoon.
  5. Use spoon to scoop the avocado out of the skin.
  6. Slice avocado
