Fresh Tomato Salsa
Fresh Tomato Salsa, also known as pico de gallo or salsa fresca, is a vibrant and versatile condiment commonly associated with Mexican cuisine. It serves as a refreshing accompaniment to a variety of dishes and is cherished for its bright flavors and simplicity.
At its core, fresh tomato salsa typically consists of diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapeños or other chili peppers, lime juice, and salt. However, variations abound, with additional ingredients such as garlic, bell peppers, mango, or avocado often incorporated to enhance flavor and texture.
The preparation of fresh tomato salsa is straightforward yet crucial for achieving optimal taste and consistency. Ripe tomatoes are diced into small pieces, ensuring a juicy and succulent base for the salsa. Finely chopped onions provide a sharp, pungent note, while fresh cilantro adds a fragrant and herbaceous element. Jalapeños or other chili peppers contribute heat and complexity, though the level of spiciness can be adjusted according to personal preference. Lime juice not only lends acidity to balance the flavors but also helps to preserve the salsa and enhance its freshness.
The beauty of fresh tomato salsa lies in its versatility. It can be enjoyed as a dip with tortilla chips, spooned over tacos, burritos, or grilled meats, or used as a topping for salads and seafood dishes. Its vibrant colors and zesty flavors make it a welcome addition to any table, adding a burst of freshness and tanginess to meals.
Whether served at a festive gathering, a casual dinner, or simply as a snack, fresh tomato salsa embodies the essence of summer with its bright, garden-fresh taste and simple yet satisfying ingredients.

Moe’s Southwest Grill Salsa Recipe
Ingredients
- 5 medium ripe Tomatoes roughly chopped
- 1/2 medium Red Onion roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup fresh Cilantro Leaves
- 1 medium Jalapeño seeded for less heat and roughly chopped
- 2 cloves Garlic peeled and minced
- Freshly squeezed juice of 1 Lime
- 1 teaspoon ground Cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
- 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground Black Pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup Water to adjust for desired consistency
Instructions
- In a food processor or blender, combine chopped tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, jalapeño, garlic, lime juice, cumin, smoked paprika, salt and pepper. Pulse until the mixture reaches your desired consistency. For a chunkier salsa, pulse gently - for a smoother salsa, blend more thoroughly.
- Taste.
- Adjust the seasoning, adding more salt, lime juice, or cumin as needed.
- If the salsa is too thick, add water a tablespoon at a time until it reaches your preferred consistency.
- Transfer Salsa to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve chilled or at room temperature with tortilla chips, over tacos, or as a topping for your favorite dishes.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
