Brass Tacks
Brass Tacks, in Houston’s East Downtown (EaDo) district, is an innovative establishment that seamlessly blends work and leisure. The name “Brass Tacks” is inspired by the Texas expression “let’s get down to brass tacks,” meaning to focus on essentials—a philosophy reflected in their design, which harmoniously integrates elements of both work and play.
The concept for Brass Tacks was envisioned by sisters Krystal Robb and Linda Seale, with Krystal’s decade-long aspiration to create a space that fosters community and connection. Their vision materialized into a versatile venue featuring a café, bar, lounge, boardroom, and event space, catering to a diverse clientele seeking a balance between productivity and relaxation.
The establishment offers a diverse menu that caters to various tastes and times of day. From breakfast tacos and croissant sandwiches in the morning to lunch options like Bánh Mì and grilled cheese, there’s something for everyone. The beverage selection is equally impressive, featuring top-notch coffee drinks, teas, and a variety of cocktails, including espresso-based concoctions and classic mixes.
The ambiance at Brass Tacks is thoughtfully designed to accommodate both work and social interactions. The expansive space includes a large warehouse area and an inviting patio, providing ample room for individuals and groups alike. Whether you’re seeking a quiet corner to work with a coffee or a lively spot to enjoy cocktails with friends, Brass Tacks offers a versatile environment that has quickly become a popular destination in Houston’s EaDo neighborhood.
Martinis
The Martini is more than a cocktail—it is an icon of elegance, mystery, and refined indulgence, a drink that has graced the hands of spies, socialites, and statesmen for over a century. Its origins are debated, with some tracing it back to the late 19th century in Martinez, California, where a bartender supposedly crafted a “Martinez” for a gold miner. Others credit the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City, where a dry gin version emerged in the early 1900s. Regardless of its true birthplace, the martini has endured, evolving from a sweet, vermouth-heavy libation to the crisp, minimalist masterpiece it is today.
The classic martini is a study in simplicity—gin and dry vermouth, stirred to a glacial chill and garnished with a twist of lemon or a plump olive. But its variations have taken on a life of their own. The vodka martini, favored by James Bond with his famous “shaken, not stirred” directive, offers a sleeker, cleaner profile. The dirty martini, infused with olive brine, adds a salty depth. The Gibson swaps the olive for a pearl onion, lending a delicate bite. Modern riffs abound, from espresso martinis to the floral elegance of a Vesper, and even fruit-forward versions like the lychee martini.
Some of the best martinis in the world can be found in classic bars like Dukes in London, where a tableside martini ritual is practically a religious experience, or at New York’s Bemelmans Bar, where old-school glamour meets impeccable craft. Wherever you sip it, a martini remains timeless—a drink of sophistication and possibility in a chilled glass.
