Carmine’s
Carmine’s Italian Restaurant in New York City is an iconic, family-style Italian eatery known for its hearty portions and vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. Founded in 1990 by restaurateur Artie Cutler, the first Carmine’s opened in the Theater District near Times Square, quickly gaining popularity with locals and tourists alike. Cutler’s vision was to recreate the essence of traditional Italian-American dining, where families gather over generous servings of classic, comforting dishes. Carmine’s became famous for its massive, shareable platters that encouraged communal dining, a refreshing experience in the often fast-paced NYC dining scene.
The restaurant’s menu features Italian-American staples, including heaping portions of spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmigiana, lasagna, and signature dishes like the Porterhouse Contadina. Every dish at Carmine’s is prepared with bold flavors and a focus on quality ingredients, reflecting the rich traditions of Southern Italian cuisine. Carmine’s also offers a variety of Italian-inspired cocktails, like the Very Italian Manhattan, alongside a selection of wines that pair well with the robust flavors of the food.
Over the years, Carmine’s has expanded to multiple locations, including Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C., but it remains an NYC landmark for its commitment to delivering a genuine, celebratory Italian dining experience. With its bustling atmosphere, oversized dishes, and warm service, Carmine’s continues to be a go-to spot for both locals and visitors seeking authentic Italian comfort food in a lively, family-friendly setting.
The Manhattan Cocktail
The Manhattan Cocktail, a classic and iconic drink, has a rich history rooted in the heart of American cocktail culture. Believed to have originated in the late 19th century, the exact details of its creation remain somewhat elusive. Legend has it that the Manhattan was first crafted at the Manhattan Club in New York City, where it gained popularity during a banquet in the 1870s. The cocktail’s original recipe, consisting of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, has since evolved, with variations incorporating different types of whiskey and garnishes.
The Manhattan’s fame transcends its place of birth, becoming a staple in cocktail culture worldwide. It is celebrated for its sophisticated and robust flavor profile, balancing the richness of the whiskey with the sweetness of vermouth and the complexity of bitters. This timeless concoction has maintained its allure, making it a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts and a symbol of classic mixology.
Numerous bars and establishments in Manhattan, and beyond, proudly serve their unique takes on the Manhattan cocktail. Speakeasies, historic bars, and trendy mixology-focused venues often feature the Manhattan on their menu, paying homage to its enduring popularity and status as a symbol of timeless elegance. The drink’s versatility and enduring appeal have secured its place as a go-to choice for those seeking a taste of cocktail history and craftsmanship.
