Ingredients

  • 3 Granny Smith Apples peeled, cored and sliced
  • 3 Honeycrisp Apples peeled, cored and sliced
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 cup Apple Cider
  • 1/4 cup Bourbon or spiced Rum
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  • Place butter into a medium skillet. Place over medium heat.
  • When butter has melted and is hot (do not burn), add apples, tossing to coat them in butter. Cook for 5 - 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.
  • Sprinkle in brown and granulated sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt, stirring well to distribute the spices evenly over the apples.
  • Pour in the apple cider. Simmer, reducing sauce slightly as the apples continue to soften, about 5 more minutes.
  • Stir in the bourbon. Cook another 3 - 5 minutes, allowing alcohol to cook off and sauce to thicken into a rich, syrupy glaze.
  • Finish with lemon juice and vanilla, stirring to combine. Remove from heat.
  • Serve warm, spooned over smoked pork, barbecue ribs or alongside biscuits and vanilla ice cream.
