Brass Tacks
Brass Tacks, in Houston’s East Downtown (EaDo) district, is an innovative establishment that seamlessly blends work and leisure. The name “Brass Tacks” is inspired by the Texas expression “let’s get down to brass tacks,” meaning to focus on essentials—a philosophy reflected in their design, which harmoniously integrates elements of both work and play.
The concept for Brass Tacks was envisioned by sisters Krystal Robb and Linda Seale, with Krystal’s decade-long aspiration to create a space that fosters community and connection. Their vision materialized into a versatile venue featuring a café, bar, lounge, boardroom, and event space, catering to a diverse clientele seeking a balance between productivity and relaxation.
The establishment offers a diverse menu that caters to various tastes and times of day. From breakfast tacos and croissant sandwiches in the morning to lunch options like Bánh Mì and grilled cheese, there’s something for everyone. The beverage selection is equally impressive, featuring top-notch coffee drinks, teas, and a variety of cocktails, including espresso-based concoctions and classic mixes.
The ambiance at Brass Tacks is thoughtfully designed to accommodate both work and social interactions. The expansive space includes a large warehouse area and an inviting patio, providing ample room for individuals and groups alike. Whether you’re seeking a quiet corner to work with a coffee or a lively spot to enjoy cocktails with friends, Brass Tacks offers a versatile environment that has quickly become a popular destination in Houston’s EaDo neighborhood.

The Martinez Cocktail
The Martinez Cocktail is the mysterious, velvety ancestor of the modern martini—a drink with a foot in the 19th century and a soul steeped in sweet vermouth and botanicals. Believed to have originated in the mid-to-late 1800s, its creation is often attributed to legendary bartender Jerry Thomas, who was said to have crafted it at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco for a traveler bound for Martinez, California. Others argue it sprang from the city itself. Regardless, the Martinez arrived at the birth of American mixology, a time when every pour was an art and every cocktail a story.
At its heart, the Martinez marries gin—traditionally a sweeter, Old Tom style—with rich, herbaceous sweet vermouth, a bar spoon of maraschino liqueur, and a couple dashes of orange or Angostura bitters. Stirred gently and served up with a twist of lemon or orange peel, it’s a drink that walks the line between the bright, bracing notes of a martini and the depth and warmth of a Manhattan.
The Martinez isn’t found in every bar, but in those that take cocktails seriously—speakeasies, craft cocktail lounges, and old-school hotel bars—it often lurks on the back page of the menu, waiting to seduce the curious. Its devotees know: this is a drink of contemplation, of slow evenings and candlelight, a complex swirl of sweetness, spice, and subtle floral gin.
From San Francisco to London to Tokyo, modern mixologists have rediscovered and reinterpreted the Martinez, using artisanal gins and house-made vermouths. Yet even the simplest, classic version still evokes a time when cocktails were handwritten, stirred by candlelight, and passed across polished mahogany. The Martinez is more than a drink—it’s the elegant forebear of a dynasty.
