Yummy cake pops are all the rage ever since they been seen at Starbucks. It’s such a great idea, especially as a complement to coffee. It’s great for parties, showers or weddings. It a new way to enjoy chocolate, cake and anything yummy on a stick. It’s surprisingly simple to make with very amazing results. Chocolate cake mix made(need eggs-2, oil, water) ready made frosting jar(betty crocker etc.) lollipop sticks 2 T. crisco chocolate chips(1 bag) to melt Peanuts or any nuts Misc: sprinkles, white chocolate for drizzling, etc. Just bake a box cake mix and cool. When it is cool just crumple it up to crumbs, add 1/2 of a jar of ready made frosting mix. Form into balls and chill for 30 min in refrigerator. Melt chocolate chips in microwave for 30 seconds at a time, be careful not to burn. Add 2 Tb of crisco to melted chocolate and mix well. Dip sticks in chocolate then into balls, then chill in fridge for 1 hour. This is so sticks stay in. Dip pops in melted chocolate and put desired toppings.

I’m not sure if you have a Kroger’s in your neck of the woods or not. I’m pretty sure that, even if you do, you haven’t tried this particular dessert. The newspaper article I got it from says this “Death by Chocolate” was created in the Highlands Store in Louisville by Chef Christopher Paul Dowell. It also says that the stores share successful recipes and I have seen it in other Louisville area stores. So maybe you’ve tried it.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter. If you haven’t had it — you need to. If you have — you know what I’m talking about! It is a Gooey Brownie/Fudge combination that is simply heavenly.

The name “Death By Chocolate” is much used in desserts. Their is a whole cookbook by Marcel Desaulniers called Death By Chocolate (and it is wonderful!). So it is possible that you have had a different dessert with this name before. In the Desaulniers cookbook the title dessert is a cake.

Kroger’s Death By Chocolate Copycat Recipe

  • 1 pound unsalted Butter
  • 14 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 cups Sugar
  • 8 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose Flour
  • pinch of Salt

Directions

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees
2. Grease and lightly Flour a 9 by 13 baking dish or casserole pan
3. Melt the Butter and 10 ounces of the Chocolate Chips over a double broiler. Remove from heat.
4. Whisk in the Sugar, then the Eggs, one at a time.
5. Whisk in the Vanilla.
6. Mix in the Flour and Salt.
7. Fold the remaining Chocolate Chips into the Batter
8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
9. Bake in middle of the oven for one hour.
10. Take out and check that the middle is set. It’s probably not yet. Return to oven, checking every 10 minutes until the center is set (a knife inserted will come out clean.)
11. Cool completely before you slice.
