Burger King Whopper and Angry Whopper
The Whopper was created in 1957 by Burger King co-founder James McLamore and originally sold for 37¢ (US$3.27 in 2014).
McLamore created the burger after he noticed that a rival restaurant was having success selling a larger burger. Believing that the success of the rival product was its size, he devised the Whopper.
The name was chosen because he felt that it conveyed “imagery of something big”. Major fast food chains did not release a similar product until the McDonald’s Big Mac was introduced in 1967, followed by the Burger Chef Big Chef in the early 1970s.
Initially the sandwich was made with a plain bun, however, that changed when the company switched to a sesame-seeded bun in the early 1970s. In 1985, the weight of the Whopper was increased to 4.2 oz (120 g), while the bun was replaced by a Kaiser roll. This was part of a program to improve the product and featured a US$30 million (approx US$66 million in 2014) advertising campaign featuring various celebrities such as Mr. T and Loretta Swit. The goal of the program was to help differentiate the company and its products from those of its competitors. The Whopper reverted to its previous size in 1987 when a new management team took over the company and reverted many of the changes initiated by the previous management team. The Whopper sandwich’s Kaiser roll was changed back into a sesame seed bun in 1994, eliminating the last trace of the sandwich’s 1985 reconfiguration
Burger King Whopper Recipe

Ingredients
- Large 5 inch Sesame−Seed Hamburger Buns
- Ground Beef or Frozen Hamburger Patties 5 inch
- Salt
- Dill Pickles
- Ketchup
- Tomato - sliced
- Lettuce - Chopped
- Sweet Onion - Sliced
- Mayonnaise
Instructions
- Fire up your grill to a high heat
- Toast both halves of your bun. Use your toaster if you can. Or use the grill (be EXTRA Careful) or a skillet on the stove top.
- If using fresh ground beef, form your hamburger patties, large and thin.
- Lightly salt the burgers then cook them on the grill to your desired doneness.
- Assemble your Whopper
- On the top bun put a smear of mayo, a small sprinkling of lettuce, 2 tomato slices (not overlapping)
- On the bottom bun put the hamburger patty, 4 pickles (not overlapping), with a squirt bottle make 3 spiraling "rings" of ketchup and 3 onion ring slices.
- Carefully, place the top bun on the bottom (use your thumb on the tomatoes to hold everything in place) and you are done.

Burger King Angry Whopper

Burger King Angry Whopper Recipe
As of this writing, Burger King no longer offers the Angry Whopper. Now you can make it at home.
Ingredients
- Thick-cut Smoked Bacon
- Pepper Jack Cheese
- Iceberg Lettuce
- Spicy Onion Petals See Note Below this Box
- Ripe Tomatoes
- Spicy Jalapeno Slices
- Angry Whopper Sauce Recipe Below
- Toasted sesame seed bun
Instructions
- Preheat a barbecue grill on high.
- Toast both halves of the bun, face down, in a hot skillet. Set aside.
- Form the beef into a thin patty slightly larger than the bun.
- Lightly salt the hamburger patty and cook on the barbecue grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side.
- Build the burger in the following stacking order from the bottom up: bottom bun, hamburger patty, Pepper Jack cheese, jalapenos, bacon, Angry Whopper sauce, onion petals, tomatoes, lettuce, top bun.

Angry Whopper Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons packed Brown Sugar
- 3 tablespoons Ketchup
- 2 tablespoons prepared Yellow Mustard not the powdered yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Frank’s Hot Sauce
- 2 teaspoons Mayonnaise not Miracle Whip
- 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Chili Powder
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
